Breakthroughs Start with Support: Gwyneth’s Story

Gwenyth Leibhauser

In September 2021, Gwyneth was starting her senior year of high school, focused on college applications, performances, and what came next. When an MRI revealed a brain tumor, everything shifted overnight. She felt fine, which made the diagnosis even harder to grasp.

Within weeks, she underwent surgery. And within months, she was back on stage. Gwyneth made a decision early on: her diagnosis would not define her.

Now a college senior, Gwyneth continues to navigate treatment, recovery, and the invisible weight of a brain tumor. Some days are harder than others. But instead of holding her back, the experience has made her more determined.

She’s learned that strength isn’t always visible and that every diagnosis matters. Sharing stories like hers helps others feel less alone and pushes awareness forward.

For her parents, Heather and Eric, the diagnosis sparked a need to act. Through the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA), they found not only information but a community of researchers, clinicians, and families facing similar challenges. That connection became critical when Gwyneth experienced a recurrence years later. Heather and Eric were informed, supported, and ready to navigate what came next.

Support also became something they could give back. Through the BT5K and a family-led fitness fundraiser, Gwyneth’s parents turned community support into meaningful research funding, helping advance better treatments for Gwyneth and others.

Brain tumors are the leading cause of cancer-related death in children and adolescents in the United States, yet progress in treatment has been limited.

For families, this isn’t abstract. It affects every part of life. Support changes that.

Support accelerates research.
Support connects families to trusted information.
Support builds a community.

Today, Gwyneth is benefiting from advances made possible by those who chose to invest in research. And because of continued support, there is real momentum toward more effective treatments.

That’s how progress happens.
