Senior Director, Human Resources
Since 1973 the American Brain Tumor Association has been the champion of the brain tumor community. Our mission: to advance the understanding and treatment of brain tumors with the goals of improving, extending and, ultimately, saving the lives of those impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis.
The Senior Director, Human Resources provides high-level leadership and guidance to the organization’s human resources operations, and is responsible for overall administration, coordination and evaluation of the human resource function at the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA). This position is responsible for developing and implementing Human Resource programs and functions and implementing talent management goals while advocating positive employee relations and best practices in support of organizational growth and strategic initiatives. The incumbent is also charged with setting, enforcing and evaluating legally compliant HR policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with federal and state employment-related laws, developing and delivering creative, cost-effective human resources solutions in support of the organization’s strategic business plan, culture and core values.
This is a hybrid position where the incumbent lives within the Chicagoland area. Travel to the Chicago office will be expected on occasion.
Key Responsibilities
Talent Management
- Provides professional expertise and support in the development and implementation of the talent review process that is required to achieve ABTA’s organizational goals to recruit, staff, and retain top talent.
- Identifies staffing and recruiting needs and develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
- Manages the life-cycle of recruitment (post, screen, background checks, references, offer, onboarding, etc.).
Staff Development / Advancement
- Supports a human capital development and coaching culture within the ABTA.
- Provides, evaluates, and monitors training and development opportunities for employees to meet the needs of the organization.
- Maintains current process for succession planning.
Compensation and Benefits
- Administers the ABTA’s employee insurance programs including health, life, and disability plans.
- Administers the organization’s 401K plan.
- Advises and informs employees of changes and developments related to benefits including eligibility, coverage, and provisions.
- Manages the health insurance renewal process including plan renewal and/or updates, and open enrollment activities and processes.
- Ensures compliance with the applicable provisions of COBRA, HIPPA, and ERISA.
- Manages the administration of the compensation program and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local compensation laws and regulations.
- Oversees and administers the payroll process and maintains payroll records.
- Manages the performance review process, providing appropriate documentation, and instructions to management focusing on continuous improvement of the process.
- Works closely with the President and CEO on administrating promotions, merit increases, and related salary adjustments.
Employee Relations
- Leads and facilitates the employee relations program and related functions, including an annual employee engagement survey
- Develops and pursues new goals and objectives for improvement in areas of employee relations.
- Promotes positive employee engagement focusing on areas for improvement, communication, and inclusion.
- Encourages participation in ABTA’s employee recognition programs.
- Communicates with employees regarding employee relation concerns and provides guidance and recommendations for resolution of issues.
- Provides counsel to employees on concerns related to applicable Equal Employment Opportunity laws including Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and other similar federal and state laws.
- Drives performance improvement processes and promotes positive changes in the areas of human capital.
- Develops and leads working groups to inform policy updates and improved employee engagement, as needed
- Assists managers in understanding and implementing company policies related to performance, discipline, and related topics.
Policies
- Develops and administers various human resources policies and procedures for all ABTA personnel.
- Reviews and revises the employee handbook as needed.
- Writes and develops company policies, as required, and communicates changes to personnel policies and procedures to employees to ensure compliance.
Legal Compliance
- Keeps abreast of industry trends and employment legislation and ensures ABTA’s compliance.
- Ensures employee safety and maintains compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) standards.
- Manages the workers’ compensation program including insurance and employee safety on the job.
- Maintains current knowledge and understanding of regulations, nonprofit trends, current best practices, new developments, and applicable laws regarding human resources management.
- Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, to address personnel matters.
General
- Participates in and contributes to the organization-wide strategic planning process.
- Manages the human resources budget.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned at any time.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree desired) in human resource management, or related field.
- Must have 7+ years of broad-based HR experience, with working knowledge of multiple human resource disciplines including employee relations issues, compensation practices, diversity, performance management, and federal and state employment laws.
- Current human resource certification PHR / SPHR and/or SHRM-CP / SCP highly desired.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills: friendly, tactful and a good negotiator with the ability to influence others.
- Demonstrated strategic planning and visioning experience in a nonprofit environment, with budgetary experience.
- Ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, including developing a top-notch workforce and processes that ensure organizational effectiveness.
- Ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including staff, Board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters.
- Ability to anticipate future trends and incorporate them into the organizational plan.
- Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and objectives.
- Ability to function as a dependable leader and team player.
- Experience in a nonprofit environment desired.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with customer service and employee relations focus.
- Must demonstrate a positive outlook, enthusiasm, high energy, and be self-motivated.
- Strong collaboration skills and innovative business management, with a high degree of creativity and initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a change agent for operational effectiveness.
- Ability to cultivate and nurture relationships across a diverse spectrum of cultural and professional backgrounds.
- Strong ethics and carry out responsibilities in an ethical, professional, and objective manner.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to work some evenings and weekends for professional meetings.
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, Sharepoint, PowerPoint.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $91,200 to $105,000 annually, commensurate with experience which will be evaluated during the candidate selection process
