Our Highest Honor: The Joel A. Gingras, Jr. Award

Since 2010, the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has awarded the Joel A. Gingras Jr. Award, our highest honor, to recognize an individual, organization or group that has made significant contributions to the Association’s mission through philanthropy, advocacy, discovery, or patient care.

About the Joel A. Gingras, Jr. Award

The ABTA’s highest honor, the Gingras Award pays tribute to Joel A. Gingras Jr., who died in 1988 due to complications from treatment of a choroid plexus papilloma, a rare, non-cancerous brain tumor.

The following year—channeling all of their grief and good intentions—the Gingras family created the Joel Anthony Gingras Memorial Foundation (JAG Fund) to raise money for and increase awareness of brain tumors. An already popular annual tube float organized by the family became the fundraising mechanism. Since then, the entire Gingras family and its board of directors have made an unprecedented impact within the brain tumor community, by raising much-needed funds to help the American Brain Tumor Association provide patient services and invest in research. Never losing sight of their mission, the JAG Foundation has donated $2.8 million to the ABTA over the past 34 years.

Serving as the pinnacle of our philanthropic honors, the Gingras Award is also a testament to the dedication of the Gingras Family and others like them, who continue to support the ABTA mission. Thanks to all past, present and future recipients, we may be closer to a cure for brain tumors.

2025 Gingras Award Winner: Dr. Erin Dunbar

Honoring Dr. Erin Dunbar

Dr. Erin Dunbar has dedicated her career to advancing care, research, and access for people affected by brain tumors. As the Founding Physician and Director of Neuro-Oncology at the Piedmont Brain Tumor Center at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, she has helped build a program grounded in innovation, compassion, and patient-centered care.

From leading multi-center clinical trials to guiding patients and families through life-changing diagnoses, Dr. Dunbar brings clarity and empathy to every step of the journey. Her work reflects a deep understanding that progress in brain tumor care requires both scientific rigor and human connection.

A central focus of Dr. Dunbar’s approach is personalized medicine and equity in access to care. She often describes her philosophy as “evidence-based hope,” a blend of research, strategy, and compassion that ensures patients are supported not only by the latest science, but also by care teams who listen and respond to their needs.

Beyond the clinic, Dr. Dunbar collaborates with partners such as the National Institutes of Health, mentors future neuro-oncologists, and works with policy and insurance leaders to help expand access to high-quality care. Across these efforts, her goal remains consistent. She works to make sure every patient, regardless of where they live or their circumstances, has the tools and support they need to move forward.

Dr. Dunbar’s career has been defined by service to patients, to the scientific community, and to a future shaped by collaboration and progress.

The American Brain Tumor Association is honored to recognize Erin Dunbar for her leadership, lasting impact on brain tumor research and policy, and commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care. Her work continues to inspire hope throughout the brain tumor community.
