Functional MRI
This imaging technique produces MRI scans in a faster sequence than traditional MRIs. The increased speed allows areas of the brain to "light up" on scan when the patient is asked to perform a task such as moving a finger, moving toes or feet, or speaking. This helps identify the "function" of specific areas of the brain, and is useful for preoperative surgical planning and intraoperative avoidance of these areas if possible. This imaging technique is also called echoplanar, real time, or Fast MRI.

About Meningiomas
Meningiomas are now the most common type of primary brain tumor. Although they are brain tumors, they do not originate in brain tissue. They arise from the meninges, three thin layers of tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. More common in women than in men, these tumors are most often found near the top of the brain, along the outer curve of the brain, and along the ridge at the bottom of the brain. Learn more about meningiomas and their treatment.
