How is radiation therapy done?

Your treatment will be given with a large machine that makes special energy beams and points them at your tumor. Before your treatment begins, a doctor with special radiation training will talk with you, study your scans and the report of your operation, then decide on what type of radiation is best for you and your tumor. Different types of radiation need different types of radiation machines. However, most of them use an adjustable table which slides you into the correct position under the radiation machine.

The radiation doctor may make a special mask for you that will help hold your head in place during treatment. A special strap may also be placed across your chest to remind you not to move while the radiation machine is doing its work. While the treatment machine is on, the therapist will need to move to another part of the room. Although it seems that you are alone, the therapist will be watching you on a special television screen. You will also be able to hear, and be heard by, the therapist. If you need anything during treatment, just speak up and you will be answered immediately.
