About Second Opinions

Everyday we make decisions: some are easy, some are very difficult. When faced with a difficult decision, it helps to have as much information as possible.

One way to obtain additional information regarding a medical problem is to seek a second opinion. Another qualified physician may assure you that the recommended treatment is the best available for your particular situation, advise you of other options, or perhaps give you a different perspective or a clearer understanding of the problem you face.

A second opinion, however, should not delay an emergency procedure. If any delay would be life-threatening, treatment takes priority over consultation. A second opinion can still be obtained following the emergency treatment.

Seeking a second opinion is standard medical practice. It does not always require travel or the transfer of care to a second physician. Many physicians will discuss current treatments and other options based on medical records and a telephone interview.

It should not be considered "disloyal" to seek another opinion. Many insurance companies now require a second opinion prior to non-emergency surgery. It is your right to fully understand your illness, the potential benefits and risks of the recommended treatment, and any alternatives for care or treatment.

Other sources of physician information include the Physician Referral Service offered by most hospitals the Cancer Information Service at 800-422-6237 or the National Institutes of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke at 800-352-9424.

After the information is gathered, weighing the alternatives and making a decision can be overwhelming. Discuss the options with your family doctor and those close to you. Friends, family and clergy can all help. Remember, you are not alone.
