American Brain Tumor Association Receives 4-Star Fiscal Responsibility Rating from Charity Navigator
ABTA Among 3 Percent of U.S. Charities to Receive Rating for 5+ Years
Des Plaines, Ill. – For the sixth consecutive year, Charity Navigator has awarded the American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) a 4-star rating for sound fiscal management.
The designation is based on ABTA’s “ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances.” Only 3 percent of Charity Navigator- endorsed charities have received at least five consecutive 4-star evaluations.
“For 35 years, ABTA has helped play an important role in unraveling the mysteries of brain tumors while serving as a leading resource for information on brain tumor treatment and care,” said ABTA Executive Director Elizabeth M. Wilson. “While we have seen significant progress, none of it would be possible without the ongoing commitment and support of our family of donors and sponsors. Maintaining their trust is an utmost priority.”
The Charity Navigator designation indicates that the “American Brain Tumor Association consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America,” said Ken Berger, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator, in a letter to ABTA. This “exceptional designation from Charity Navigator differentiates American Brain Tumor Association from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
More information on ABTA’s Charity Navigator rating is available at: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=7605.
In addition to the Charity Navigator 4-star rating, ABTA has received the highest accreditations and ratings from the following charity and consumer watchdog organizations:
- The Better Business Bureau – The ABTA received a Better Business Bureau (BBB) accreditation in May 2007 after meeting the organization’s 20 standards for “Charity Accountability.” More information on the accreditation is available at: http://charityreports.bbb.org/public/seal.aspx?ID=205992008.
- The American Institute of Philanthropy – The ABTA was listed among the American Institute of Philanthropy’s (AIP) “Top Rated Charities,” receiving a grade of “A” for fiscal management practices. Less than 20 percent of the more than 500 non-profit organizations reviewed by AIP each year receive a grade of B+ or higher. Generally, these groups “spend 75% or more of their budgets on programs,” and just “$25 or less to raise $100 in public support.” AIP top rated charities also “do not hold excessive assets in reserve,” and freely disclose “basic financial information and documents.” More information on the ABTA’s AIP rating is available at: http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html.
- Independent Charities of America (ICA) – The ABTA is listed as a “Best in America” non-profit charity by Independent Charities of America (ICA). The designation followed a “rigorous independent” ICA review, that included annual proof that ABTA meets “the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness and cost effectiveness.” The ABTA’s ICA listing is available online at: https://www.independentcharities.org/search/findset.asp?Title=View+Our+National+And+International+Members&c=n
Founded in 1973, ABTA was the first national non-profit organization dedicated solely to promoting brain tumor research while providing brain tumor patients and their families with care and treatment information and resources. This year, the Des Plaines-based ABTA will fund more than $2.6 million in research and provide desperately needed support and information to more than 1.5 million brain tumor patients and their families.
